How Thai Numbers Work
The structure of Thai numbers is very logical and easy to learn!
1. Tens (10, 20, 30...)
To make a "tens" number, you generally say the base number followed by the word for ten: สิบ (sìp).
The Exceptions: 20 and 1
There are only two major exceptions to memorize when constructing numbers:
Exception A: Number 20
Instead of saying "สองสิบ (sɔ̌ɔng-sìp)", Thai uses a special word for twenty:
Exception B: Numbers ending in 1
When 1 is the last digit of any number greater than 10, it is pronounced as เอ็ด (èt) instead of หนึ่ง (nʉ̀ng).
